HATSUKAICHI廿日市市
Housing one of the heralded ‘three views of Japan’, (along with the sandbar of Amanohashidate in Kyoto Prefecture, and Matsushima Bay in Miyagi) the island of Itsukushima (also known as Miyajima - literally ‘shrine island’) in the municipality of Hatsukaichi in Hiroshima Prefecture is one of western Japan’s most revered spots. The iconic torii gate, rising from the Seto Inland Sea, is a staple of many a tourist snapshot and guidebook, but there is so much more to the island - explore the various back streets and temples, and climb Mount Misen for a great trip, steeped in history and nature.
