Esashi (Hokkaido Prefecture), one of the oldest towns in Hokkaido, is located on the western coast of the island’s southern tip. The origins of the name Esashi are ambiguous. Some claim it derives from the Ainu word meaning konbu (Japanese kelp seaweed), while others say it comes from their word for cape.
