KAMOENAI

Though not a hot spot for thrills and spills – some of the brightest lights on display in Kamoenai (Hokkaido Prefecture) are the lanterns strung out for attracting ika (squid) on the little, bobbing boats in the sea – this small fishing village, set in a wooded valley with a river running through it, does not lack charm. Kamoenai makes a pleasant base from which to explore the whole Shakotan Peninsula.
