AMAMI奄美市
While hordes of summer holidaymakers join an annual exodus from Japan to the tropical climes of Hawaii, Guam and the like, more prudent travellers might be better advised to stay a little closer to the mainland, and visit the island of Amami Oshima, located 380 kilometres from the southern coast of Kagoshima Prefecture.
Complementing the turquoise waters that lap the huge stretches of sandy beaches, the island is covered in swathes of mountain forest, and boasts a wide range of speciality cuisine and tropical fruit. Add to these attractions Amami’s hot springs, and rich tradition of handicrafts, and you have a perfect island getaway.
