KUMAMOTO PREFECTURE

Located in central Kyushu, Kumamoto is a prefecture of active volcanoes, hot springs and gushing rivers. Though damaged in a 2016 earthquake, the 17th-century Kumamoto Castle is one of several pretty, traditional sites that dot the prefectural capital. Away from the city, the wonderful mix of history and nature at Hitoyoshi is highly recommended, and the countryside of Aso is a must-see.
