NAGATORO FIRE FESTIVAL

We had a great time revisiting NAGATORO in Saitama Prefecture on March 3rd for the town’s annual Fire Festival (‘Himatsuri’).

Monks walked through flames at the foot of Mt. Hodo to celebrate the arrival of spring (although the cold and rain felt pretty wintery to us!), against the sound of gourds being played like atonal trumpets.

The peach trees in this part of the Chichibu area are already in flower, but visitors in April are sure to be overwhelmed by the approaching cherry blossom.
