MATSUSHIMA松島町
Though Matsushima (Miyagi Prefecture) is a small town, the view of its pine-wooded islands is known to all Japanese as being one of the three most celebrated beauty spots in Japan (along with the torii gate of Miyajima in Hiroshima Prefecture, and the sandbar of Amanohashidate in Kyoto).
These pine (matsu) islands have long been lauded by poets and historical figures. Take a boat tour to get up close and really appreciate their curious shapes and geology.
The town itself is beautifully set in a bay and is easily accessed from Sendai.
One of the 100 hidden towns in Japan chosen for this publication.
