Usuki (Oita Prefecture) lies in one of the birthplaces of Japanese culture and history. Kyushu has often been at the forefront of political and religious changes, and these are reflected in the area. There is a wide choice of historical and religious sites, some dating back thousands of years. Many of the sites offer more questions than answers, and their origins are often obscure.
