SHIGA PREFECTURE

Dominated by the giant Lake Biwa, Shiga is somewhat overshadowed by the more famous prefectures of Nara and Kyoto. Nevertheless, there are plenty of beaches and holiday resorts for restful stays, as well as a chance to climb Mount Ibuki for extensive views over the lake’s tranquil waters. Located in the centre of the prefecture, the town of Hikone hosts samurai houses and one of Japan’s most iconic castles.
