SHIMAME PREFECTURE

The sparsely populated prefecture of Shimane is home to a wonderful mix of history, ancient culture and natural areas. The major prefectural hub of Matsue is a popular draw, and the ancient shrine at Izumo garners thousands of visitors a year from all over Japan and its Asian neighbours. The award-winning garden of the Adachi Museum of Art in Yasugi is another of Shimane’s outstanding attractions, with other recommended spots including the theatre traditions and fantastic nature of Masuda, as well as the activity-packed island of Nishinoshima.
