The Tohoku Region東北地区
Comprising six large prefectures, the Tohoku region is best known for its cold winters, gorgeous mountainscapes, hot springs, and the towering figures of the warlord Masamune Date and the haiku poet Basho Matsuo.
The region is slowly but steadily recovering from the effects of the tsunami and nuclear disaster that it suffered in 2011.
Whether you are looking for spectacular countryside, outdoor activities, unique festivals or just an interest in deep, rural Japan, the Tohoku region has plenty to offer.
