BOATS AND FERRIES

Including the four major islands of Japan, the archipelago totals over 6,850 islands, of which 430 are inhabited, and several are featured within Japan – 100 Hidden Towns. Naturally, many of the islands of Japan can only be reached by sea, and access can be heavily affected by the weather. Check out English-language websites of your island of choice, for details on getting there and back. Depending on the destination, there may be a choice of services, from plodding ferries to zipping jetfoil boats.
