WALKING

The Getting there and around sections in Japan – 100 Hidden Towns give visitors practical advice on navigating their way around the towns. Many of the towns have our recommended attractions within walking distance from each other, but equally, many towns have them at disparate locations, requiring use of wheeled transport as mentioned above.
Japan is, of course, mountainous. For climbers and hikers, the country is utopic. Thanks to the public transport service, one is never too far from a mountain to climb or from a pretty hike. However, be aware that the changeable Japanese climate can cause particularly hazardous conditions in mountainous areas.
